What if the air inside your customers’ homes was 100x more polluted than the air outside? Wouldn’t that concern them? And wouldn’t it provide you, as an HVAC professional, an important avenue to further serve them?
This week on Cracking the Code, Drew Cameron continues his ongoing series on air by discussing the Stack Effect and what it means for your customers. Since indoor air is breathed and rebreathed and doesn’t escape the home, it can be up to 100x more polluted than outdoor air – and that’s where you and your IAQ options comes in.

00:00:00:00 – 00:00:09:05
On today’s show, you’re going to learn more about air with Mr. Drew Cameron.
00:00:09:07 – 00:00:30:21
You. All right. Let’s get going with today’s show. Now, Drew Cameron is going to continue to educate us with his series on air and how we can take this knowledge to help solve problems for our homeowners. Take it away, drew. Hi, and welcome back to another episode of Cracking the Code. I am your host, Drew Cameron with Flow Odyssey, and we are going to pick up where we left off the last time.
00:00:30:24 – 00:00:55:10
We are doing a series about air and the importance of air quality. And so, this segment is called air to the Sustenance of Life, part two. So we did air one, which was common health problems that air causes with people. And then we did air two, which is the sustenance of life, part one. And then this is air to the sustenance of life, part two.
00:00:55:10 – 00:01:13:08
And then we will build on this in future episodes as well. With that being said, as we talked about in the last episode, the information I’m going to share with you is not only information that your technician should be using on service and maintenance calls, but also that your salespeople should use on indoor air quality sales calls as well as HVAC sales calls.
00:01:13:15 – 00:01:37:27
And then you can also incorporate this into all of your marketing as well. And again, you can incorporate some of the language and the imagery into, PDFs, web pages, social media as well as, video, website, video and radio commercials and TV commercials as well. So let’s go ahead and pick up where we left off, and we’re going to be talking about air, the sustenance of life, and where we left off.
00:01:37:27 – 00:01:56:04
So we got to the reality is air is the one nutrient. It’s the only nutrient, in fact, as humans, that we cannot live without for even five minutes, we can live without food, we can live without water, but we cannot live without air for five minutes. It is that important. Yet we do not consider it at the level that we care about.
00:01:56:04 – 00:02:16:06
The, you know, the quality of food and things that we drink. Being so clean and nutritious and healthy and safe and in many cases organic. Right? We we worry about that stuff. Like you wouldn’t let your kid go drink out of a mud puddle, but you’re doing the equivalent every day. You breathe through dirty air in a dirty duct system.
00:02:16:09 – 00:02:32:09
It’s like breathing you through a vacuum cleaner bag. In fact, we don’t even have vacuum cleaner bags anymore. So I’ve dated myself a little bit there. But, you know, if you actually went and took the Dyson tank vacuum and just kind of, you know, breathed on in an essence that’s kind of what you breathe in and that’s stuff that you can see.
00:02:32:14 – 00:02:50:19
What we’re really talking about here is not only the big stuff, the ping pong balls and the dust bunnies. You know that your your filtration systems get. We’re talking about the fine and the ultra fine particles. So that that being said, I want you to do this, exercise with me. If you could close your eyes and think about every breath you take.
00:02:50:22 – 00:03:09:07
In fact, every breath you’ve taken since you were born, what about every breath that your loved ones have taken since birth? I want you to think about that. Because as parents, many of us are parents. We’ve brought children into this world, and we we’ve put them in, brought them into our home. We think that we’re doing the best thing for them because we’re concerned about them and we care about them.
00:03:09:07 – 00:03:28:16
We love them, and we want them to be healthy, safe and comfortable. And we think that we’re doing everything possible. But I want you to think about every breath that you’ve taken since birth, and every breath that your children have taken since birth. And maybe if you have grandchildren, know your children’s children and even your adults, your parents, you know, grandparents and whatnot as well, great parents, if you have those.
00:03:28:18 – 00:03:50:11
And so breathe deep and breathe deep and think about every breath and I want you to as again, you’re closing your eyes and I want you to consider the following. Air is the only nutrient you can’t live without for even five minutes. Okay. And so where does your fresh air come from? In the last episode, we talked about the fact that we’re breathe air.
00:03:50:11 – 00:04:11:08
We breathe air that has been in other people’s bodies, and there’s millions upon millions of microbes, both within our bodies and on our bodies. And so when we breathe out, other people breathe that in, and vice versa. In fact, we come to find out that we’re re breathing about 3% of air, indoors that other people have breathed.
00:04:11:10 – 00:04:27:02
And you wouldn’t think about putting food that has been in someone else’s mouth into your mouth, nor would you put it on someone else’s clothes. But we do this on a on a day to day basis. So the air, if you really think about it, isn’t fresh. So is the source of fresh air that you’re breathing in. Okay.
00:04:27:04 – 00:04:43:03
Is the is the source that you’re getting this air from? Is it healthy? Is it safe, like the bottled water that you’re drinking? And bottled water is not great, right. Because of most of it’s leaching leach into plastics. But if it’s in glass, you’re probably safe. It’s in a can. You’re probably safe. But we’re worried about that. We’re drinking bottled water.
00:04:43:03 – 00:05:04:28
We’re not even drinking out of the tap anymore. I mean, we grew up, some of us drinking out of a hose, and that was okay. We wouldn’t do that at all anymore. And we worry about the food being, you know, you know, coming from a sustainable, healthy source, maybe even being organic, free of pest pesticides. We want grass fed beef and, you know, chickens and, you know, wild caught fish and, organic produce, all of that, right?
00:05:04:28 – 00:05:23:12
Free of pesticides and, hormones and all of that. We’re all worried about all of that. So hypervigilant about the food and, and, liquids that we consume. But we don’t think about the air. And what I want you to do is I want you to start thinking about the air, because I need you to bring this front and center into the minds of your consumers.
00:05:23:19 – 00:05:46:20
We need to make air tangible. And so air should be clean, safe, healthy, fresh, purified, humidity balanced and organic. Right? In fact, what you come to find out, according to the EPA, indoor air is easily five times more polluted than outdoor air and up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air in a residential setting and up to 500 times more polluted in a commercial setting.
00:05:46:22 – 00:06:08:01
And that’s because of, you know, off gassing and, you know, lights give off, you know, gassing. And the electronics around us are off gassing and the quick drying paints and adhesives and the particle board, and the furniture and the carpets, everything is off gassing in the space. In addition to the fact that the the space is breathing in, if you’re in a industrialized area, you probably get what’s outside is inside to some extent.
00:06:08:03 – 00:06:27:09
And again, we’re all trapped inside the space with the windows closed. And again, we’re re breathing and giving off our microorganisms as well. So the problem is, is that the health and safety at stake since houses have gotten I mean our health and safety are at stake since our houses have gotten tighter in the last 30 years, meaning they don’t breathe as freely as they used to.
00:06:27:09 – 00:06:52:11
And in some capacities, as we talk about in the Hvac and indoor air quality sales training, that’s a good thing. Houses breathe, but they breathe widely, uncontrollably. They shouldn’t though. We need to control that. And that is a conversation for another day. But houses used to breathe. And so what was outside became inside. And even though outside might be a little bit polluted, it’s not nowhere near as polluted as the indoor air.
00:06:52:18 – 00:07:15:09
And so the outdoor air diluted the indoor air when houses breathed. But now houses are getting tighter with Tyvek wraps and, you know, silicone and caulking and spray foam and, you know, close, close and open. So, cell foam insulation and we’re getting these net zero houses, which is great, but unless you bring in the fresh air and control it, you’re going to have problems.
00:07:15:16 – 00:07:35:04
Health problems? In the house. Right. And homes are no longer breathing. And so if the air is not escaping, then the fresh, healthy air is not coming back in. And that’s if you go ahead and go on YouTube and you watch some videos on Stack Effect, go to YouTube, type in a words stack effect in the search bar and type in, Doctor Energy Saver or Larry Jet Ski.
00:07:35:06 – 00:07:58:13
So stack effect, it’s about a 30 minute video. It will help you understand how basically air leaks out of the top of the house. And since air is being displaced out of the top of the house because, you know, the top of the house is positive, pressurized or blowing at the top, there’s sucking at the bottom. And if we to actually stop that at the top level, we can improve the comfort, safety and health of the indoor occupants as well.
00:07:58:15 – 00:08:16:06
So realize this. And this is this is some great language here. I use this in a radio commercial, a television commercial and on hold messaging. And I would highly recommend that you incorporate this into some of your marketing as well. But think about this air right now. And again, I wouldn’t start out with that. But again, you have this in the back of your mind.
00:08:16:06 – 00:08:40:13
But pose this and you could get like the the person who promotes movies in a world. Right. So and the person comes on and says it flows throughout your home and your lungs 24 hours a day. It dances from room to room and permeates everything in your home, including your body. You can’t get away from it even when you sleep.
00:08:40:15 – 00:09:02:16
In fact, you can’t even live without it for five minutes. What is it? It’s air and it needs to be pure and simple in its simplest form. But the air in your home is not. It’s typically contaminate unhealthy, safe and unsafe, and potentially harmful. Hazardous and dangerous to our health and to our loved ones that fill in the blank of your company.
00:09:02:16 – 00:09:22:21
Right? We can change that cost today for no cost, no obligation indoor air quality assessment. And then you bake that into your marketing, right, for promoting your tune ups. You include that on every tune up. You include that on every sales call, an indoor air quality assessment. You include it on, every service call that you do. And how do you do that?
00:09:22:24 – 00:09:50:21
There are devices out there called air. Air quality testing monitors. Air vice makes one. Another company called AQI makes one that’s called the indoor Air Quality Doctor. And you can go ahead into the house and plug these devices in. And while you’re there on your sales call or service call, it’s testing for about 30 minutes. And then you can pull the report or, you know, online, onto your phone, onto your tablet, onto your laptop, and you can share it with the homeowner, and you can even now email to the homeowner.
00:09:50:23 – 00:10:11:04
And if you want, you can do a two step sales process and then bring that information back. The customer doesn’t need to know that you can get that information right there today, but it’s a way to promote indoor air quality, products and services into your business. And so lastly, I would close out that commercial by saying, okay, ABC air because the air you breathe matters and so do you.
00:10:11:07 – 00:10:36:24
Right. And that’s a great little commercial. It will promote your indoor air quality services will add robustness to your tune up. It will differentiate your cheap tune up from somebody else’s cheap tune up. Because again I’m going to say it’s indoor air quality assessment. And I put it, free of charge, that regular value $149. Right. And so they’re going to get my $97 tune up and 149 indoor air quality assessment for 97 bucks.
00:10:36:26 – 00:10:56:07
Again, my tune ups therefore better than somebody else’s tune up. Right. That being said, as always, your, member and therefore you are the mission.
